Selecting The Right Acupuncture Specialist
M. Ben Aria
An acupuncture specialist uses ancient Chinese techniques which have persisted in modern times. While medicine today cannot ascertain how acupuncture works, it is generally conceded that there are many who benefit from it and that more study on this practice is needed. Acupuncture has completely pervaded the West and is no longer limited to an Asian clientele. Being an acupuncture specialist is a hot job today.
What are the Methods of an Acupuncture Specialist?
Acupuncture works on a much different way than traditional medicine. Unlike Western medicine, acupuncture views diseases as a result of disharmony in the various bodily functions. The practice also incorporates various traditional Chinese philosophical concepts such as Ying, Yang and Qi.
According to this concept, Qi or energy runs along the body through interconnected networks called meridians. Disruption of this energy results in all sorts of emotional and physical illnesses. The object of acupuncture is either to release the energy disruptions with the needles, or modify the behavior of other energy flows in the body. This will hopefully restore equilibrium in the flow of Qi.
In the West, acupuncture is largely dismissed by orthodox medical practitioners as pseudo-medicine. This has to do with the rationalization of acupuncture - its use of ancient metaphysics. Strangely, acupuncture does have measurable benefits in some cases which have led some medical experts to say that there may be a scientific basis to this traditional practice. Even skeptics admit that more studies are needed to figure out exactly how acupuncture works.
An acupuncturist determines the placement of needles by making a careful assessment of the patient. It is typical for acupuncturists to make a comprehensive study of the body. Meridians are divided into major inter-related groups. These groups usually consist of various organs that stretch across the body.
Today, there are many organizations around the world which try to maintain the standards of practicing acupuncture. In the United States, a professional practitioner of acupuncture must be licensed. There are many institutions that provide training in acupuncture. There are several doctors who actually undergo training to be an acupuncture specialist so that they can provide this traditional Asian treatment alongside Western medical treatment.
