The technical term for ear acupuncture is auricular acupuncture. It's a lot like body acupuncture only with this one, stimulation is limited to the external ears. Auricular or ear acupuncture offers a way of treating various psychological and physiological health disorders via stimulation of certain acupoints found on the external ears. Ear Acupuncture 101 Auricular therapy is based on principles governing traditional Chinese medicine. It's widely used for a variety of conditions from mood disorders to obesity to addiction treatment to pain. This kind of medical system stresses the use of a holistic approach toward medicine. Acupuncture points found on ears help regulate body organs, functions and structures. This type of therapy has long been used in China. It's even cited in a renowned ancient Chinese medical textbook The Yellow Emperor's Classic Internal Medicine. Today, auricular therapy is shown to fuel or stimulate endorphins release. Endorphins are the body's very own pain-relieving chemicals. Auricular acupuncture is often incorporated into regular acupuncture treatments. Aside from using acupoints found elsewhere on the body, acupuncturists pick a number of acupuncture points on the ears that they feel could prove beneficial to treating a person's particular physical condition. The acupuncture points on the ears can be stimulated for extended time periods by utilizing ear tacks or seeds. Ear tacks are tiny needles that have an adhesive underside or backing. This type of acupuncture can even be more effective than regular body acupuncture. It's easy and totally safe for use in groups or as self-treatment. While the response may be less dramatic for glandular disruptions and organ diseases, ear needling always helps when used in combination with other modes of treatment.
