Acupuncture and Acupressure – What Are The Differences

M. Ben Aria

 Acupuncture

Acupuncture and acupressure are based on the same theories and principles. Both practices use the concept of Yin, Yang and Qi. In ancient Chinese medicine, the body is believed to possess Qi which flows in currents across the body. The disruptions in these energy flows cause physical and mental ailments. Applying external force on critical points where the energies flow is believed to restore balance. Whereas acupuncture uses needles, acupressure uses just the fingers or other objects. Choosing between acupuncture and acupressure is largely a matter of individual preference.

Acupuncture and Acupressure – Techniques Used

To use acupuncture or acupressure, the practitioner must know which points in the body should receive the pressure. These points are known as acupuncture points or acupoints. They are located by having knowledge of meridians. In Chinese medicine, these are the paths in which Qi flows through the body.

Acupressure is much easier than acupuncture. Practitioners can use their own fingers to apply pressure on the acupoints. They can also use other blunt objects too. They place just the right amount of pressure on the area for about a minute or more. It should not be to strong but it should not be too light either. If there doesn’t seem to be any effects, they try placing pressure in the immediate area. Acupressure is known to be less effective than acupuncture. However, it is a lot easier to practice.

Acupuncture is done by inserting metallic needles that are about five to nine inches long. The number of needles used can be from one to twenty. Only FDA-approved needles should be used because other needles may be dangerous. These needles are usually inserted into the skin beneath the epidermis. However, sometimes the needles are inserted deep into the muscle or fat layers.

The needles are usually left for fifteen or thirty minutes. Some acupuncturists apply a little heat or some electric charge to the needles after insertion as many believe it is a bit more effective. While the thought of inserting needles may seem frightening, people hardly feel anything during an acupuncture session because the needles are really thin, about twenty times thinner than regular needles. All needles should be disposable and never used more than once. When comparing acupuncture and acupressure, it is the former that is more effective.
