Acupuncture Schools – Becoming An Acupuncturist
M. Ben Aria
Acupuncture schools are becoming extremely popular nowadays. Acupuncture is increasingly becoming an accepted alternative to modern medicine and the demand for it is strong. Students are not the only ones to seek acupuncture schools, but a lot of medical professionals are also looking to practice it side by side with their Western medical expertise.
Acupuncture Schools – What to Expect
There is much more to acupuncture than sticking needles in a patient’s body. Aspiring practitioners need to learn a great deal of what many consider “Western” medicine. This includes biochemistry, musculoskeletal physiology and anatomy, cell biology, internal medicine, nutrition and many others. Acupuncture is a serious subject that requires three to four years of study. It also requires extensive internship. Professionals must be licensed in order to practice acupuncture.
Acupuncture has its roots in ancient Chinese philosophy. Acupuncture incorporates the idea of Yin and Yang. The underlying reason for sticking needles into the body is to release negative energies and restore balance. Diseases and illnesses are described in terms of imbalances to life energies or Chi. This has caused many medical professionals to view acupuncture with a great deal of skepticism.
However, because of the undeniable benefits of this ancient practice, many are altering their opinions and even conducting studies to rationalize the effects of acupuncture in terms of Western empirical models. While still categorized as alternative medicine, many today view it as a viable treatment.
Aside from acupuncture methods, most schools will also teach students about traditional Chinese medicine, and herbal remedies. This is usually used in conjunction with acupuncture.
Choosing the Right Acupuncture Schools
An acupuncture practitioner must be licensed in order to treat. To be eligible for acupuncture school, the individual should at least have an undergraduate degree. Some institutions provide a fast-track program for existing doctors. There is no doctorate program for practitioners of acupuncture.
Ideally, acupuncture schools should be accredited. Some non-accredited institutions do not require undergraduate degrees at all. However, these schools may prevent you from meeting the licensing requirements to be a certified practitioner. Many states have laws which regulate the practice of acupuncture.
