The acupuncture point chart of the Chinese is considered one of the most popular examples of tools utilized in Chinese medicine. While these charts have been around for considerably longer, they only became widespread during the Ming dynasty. This was the time when printed vernacular literature was becoming commonplace. Often, the acupuncture point chart appeared in Chinese medicine manuals so people could learn and remember more easily the different acupoint locations.

The Acupuncture Point Chart

Acupuncture charts weren't really made for purposes of acupuncture treatment. They were created to serve Chinese medical practice in general. Chinese medicine includes moxibution, massage and reflexology. These charts aren't merely pictures that explain how to insert needles in the body. Rather, the charts represent diagrams that display the various channels' paths – conduits or meridians, as well as the acupoints' locations. Acupuncture influences the flow of qi or vital energy throughout the different organs. Needles are used to target the points and channels.

There are numerous acupoints scattered all over the body. Most charts can only display specific segments of the points and channels, depending on the particular body part, functions and/or disorders covered by the accompanying text. Separate charts can be found on the stomach, feet, ears, head and back. Some charts describe curing hot and cold diseases while others discuss treatment of disorders caused by exhaustion or the winds.

The bottom line is this - acupuncture charts are always there as visual aids to the main acupuncture text. Acupuncture charts were never intended as standalone images. They are simply illustrations to help better understand the text.

Interestingly, the Chinese acupuncture point chart hasn't changed much over the past centuries. Sure there are differences in acupoints numbers within the different periods, but the principal acupuncture points have remained the same - the Zusanli, Sanyinjiao, Neiguan, Hegu and a few others. All these are used in the practice of acupuncture. Majority of the other points serve scholastic interests. As a rule, acupuncture practitioners come up with their most preferred sets of points. Stimulation of these points enables them to achieve optimum results.
