Acupuncture Equipment
M. Ben Aria
The main acupuncture equipment that most acupuncturists can't do without are needles. Traditional Chinese medicine introduced acupuncture's unique system of natural repair or healing 5,000 years ago. Acupuncture doesn't make use of any drugs or surgery to treat a person's body. Instead, it inserts small, sterile needles into so-called acu-points on the body to restore the lost balanced energy flow. Some acupuncturists also use other specialized acupuncture equipment during the course of treatment.
Acupuncture Equipment – A Brief History
Back in the Stone Age, stone knives and other sharp tools were created to satisfy the production requirements of acupuncture treatment. Such instruments were also used for the relief of pain and illnesses. These acupuncture tools were known as “bian.”
Eventually, the “bian” stones came to be replaced by needles that were crafted from bamboo or bones. During the Shang Dynasty (about 16th to 11th century BC), bronze castings were developed. This paved the way for the creation of bronze needles.
Metal use for needle-making was particularly significant in the course of developing acupuncture treatment. Conduction generated while needling the body gave rise to the discovery of the channels (“jingluo") system. Continued practice of acupuncture later transformed it into one of the most important methods of treating various diseases.
Acupuncture Equipment – Needles and Pebbles…
There's a huge selection of acupuncture tools available. From ear acupuncture probes to round handle rolling drums to needle introducers to spring modulators to point detectors and stimulators – the list goes on and on. For people new to the acupuncture treatment concept, here are just a few of the equipment that acupuncturists use.
* Needle for face point – For needling a patient's face points, two alternatives are the small 7mm needles and the finer 0.16mm needles that are available in 15mm lengths.
* Ear acupuncture and auricular medicine needles – There are usually three options for this one. Temporarily needling is best when 15mm or 1.5-inch needles are used. For stimulation over extended periods of time, semi-permanent and press needles will do.
* Pebbles – These also go by the name acu-pellets. They are used for ear points and body acupuncture stimulation when needles are not favored. The pebbles don't actually pierce the skin but merely provide steady pressure to the points. Pebbles come in standard, ionized and magnetic versions.
There are different kinds of acupuncture equipment needles for use in acupuncture clinics. Their lengths range from 0.5 to 5.0 inches. Caliber can be between the gauges 0.45mm and 0.26mm. Needles should be inspected thoroughly prior to use. There shouldn't be any hooks or any bent or rusty sections to prevent any acupuncture mishaps and undue pain for patients while undergoing treatment.
