Acupuncture And IVF
M. Ben Aria
Acupuncture and IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) may sound like an odd couple but the truth is that the former can do a lot to ensure that the latter provides successful results. Acupuncture is regarded with suspicion in the West. Many believe that is not based on science but on superstition. While acupuncture originated from Chinese philosophy, medical research has revealed that some of its claims are scientifically provable. Increasing fertility rates with acupuncture and IVF, however, is a relatively new claim.
Acupuncture and IVF – How Does It Increase Fertility?
It may sound weird but acupuncture is now being recommended for infertility. How does sticking needles into your body improve your chances of conceiving? Well, acupuncturists themselves are at a loss trying to explain it in scientific terms. Some say that the improved blood circulation can help any anomalies in the reproductive system. Some claim that acupuncture enhances the effects of other treatments and increases success rate of in vitro fertilization.
One thing is for sure though – more research is needed. But the study will be worth it because despite the controversy, many couples are reporting success after in vitro fertilization. And the numbers aren’t insignificant. Though unverified, the rate of patients reporting success in conceiving after acupuncture treatment is above fifty percent. This is one of the reasons why acupuncture is gaining popularity as a fertility treatment. Added to this, acupuncture is usually inexpensive.
Acupuncture should be taken in conjunction with other fertility treatments. Alone, it can only address minor problems like physical and hormonal imbalances. Its main benefit is to increase the efficacy of other fertility treatments. Some of the reasons that acupuncturists cite as reasons that help in vitro fertilization include improved ovulation and improved protection of eggs.
Acupuncture is usually given before and after the in vitro fertilization. Some acupuncturists recommend herbal medicine along with the acupuncture and IVF treatment. However, it may be advisable to consult with your physician about anything ingested. Needles aren’t the only way to go with acupuncture. Laser acupuncture is a convenient alternative. Acupressure is a lightweight alternative. It involves applying pressure with fingers or blunt objects instead of sticking needles into the skin.
