Acupuncture And Depression - Using One To Treat The Other

More and more people are becoming interested in the study of acupuncture and depression. Acupuncture is often perceived as a method of treating physical aches and pains, but many are starting to compare its relative efficacy over standard depression treatment drugs. Many are getting increasingly curious and want to find out more information regarding acupuncture and depression.


Acupuncture and Depression Treatment


From the traditional Chinese medicine perspective, depression is largely associated with stagnation of the liver qi. What this essentially indicates is that the qi inside the body isn't flowing as smoothly as it should, resulting in symptoms related to depression. Some of the more common lifestyle practices or habits that could contribute to depression include the following:


* Overly expressed or repressed emotions – Those who have angry fits or display an unusual amount of grief can have disrupted qi flows.

* Poor or improper dietary habits - People into excessive alcohol and fried foods intake are especially vulnerable.

* Inadequate exercise


Due to stagnation of the liver qi, the spleen, heart and kidney systems could also be adversely affected. Any weaknesses experienced in the spleen area in the short-term can give rise to digestion and fatigue problems. Over the long-term, complications that have to do with phlegm can affect the brain in ways like muddling thought processes.


Longer term spleen infirmity can start affecting blood quality within the body, strongly influencing the heart system which in turn can cause symptoms like restlessness and/or insomnia. Since the kidneys are strongly tied to the foundations of the body's Yin and Yang, they are also likely to play a major role, affecting overall qi levels.


From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine dietary therapy, depression patients should steer clear of foods that cause liver qi stagnation including meat, greasy foods and booze. Foods that are beneficial to the liver include apples, watercress, cabbage, cucumbers, black peppers, ginger and onions. The liver is also connected to such emotions as frustration and anger. It might be helpful to reexamine a person's manner of expressing frustration and anger – whether he's unable to control their expression or have a tough time repressing them.


A person's lifestyle can impact his health. Modifications are often recommended by acupuncture practitioners. With acupuncture and depression treatment, Chinese medicine emphasizes the value of exercise. Since depression is usually linked to liver qi stagnation, constant movement and energy circulation within one's body can help address the stagnation. With energy flow becoming smoother, symptoms connected to qi stagnation ought to improve as well. Simple exercise routines like bicycle-riding and walking can prove helpful along with Chinese workouts like Qi Gong and Tai Chi.
